Philadelphia, Baked in Layers

Philadelphia’s baking story has been built by generations of people bringing their traditions into the city and making them part of its neighborhoods. Follow the Dough connects six stops that reveal those layers—from Pennsylvania Dutch doughnuts and a historic sweet potato bakery inside Reading Terminal Market to more than a century of Italian pastry, Israeli baking, French technique rooted in local ingredients, and a new Brazilian bakehouse in South Philadelphia.

Tour Tips

☀️

Best time to begin

Start around 10:00 AM, Thursday through Saturday. This schedule keeps every stop comfortably within its current operating window and gets you to Machine Shop and Kouklet before afternoon selections begin to thin out.

💳

Cost guidance

Plan to spend about $5–$15 per person at most stops, depending on what you sample or take home. Sharing is strongly recommended on this six-stop route so you can taste something at every bakery.

🚗

Parking

The route begins in Center City, where parking garages or rideshare may be easier than repeatedly moving a car. Beiler’s and Sweet T’s are both inside Reading Terminal Market and should be treated as one parking stop. The second half moves south through the Italian Market and East Passyunk area, where street parking availability can vary.

♿

Accessibility

Accessibility can vary by stop, market entrance, and parking location. Visitors who need specific accommodations should confirm entrances, seating, restrooms, and parking directly with each business before beginning the tour.

💡

More tour tips

Come hungry, but pace yourself. Six stops create a broader tasting experience than the five-stop Doughful routes, so split doughnuts, pie, cookies, and pastries whenever possible.

Treat Reading Terminal Market as one combined stop for transportation purposes. Visit Beiler’s and Sweet T’s back-to-back before leaving the market.

For the strongest full-route schedule, choose Thursday through Saturday. Machine Shop is currently open Wednesday through Sunday, Kouklet’s East Passyunk shop is open Monday and Thursday through Sunday, and the other core stops are available on these days.

Menus change. Machine Shop’s seasonal pastry case and Kouklet’s rotating Brazilian offerings are part of the experience, so avoid promising a specific flavor beyond the core signature items.

Philadelphia traffic, market crowds, and parking can change the timing substantially. The route is designed as a relaxed half-day experience rather than a strict appointment schedule.
